"Last fall, a fossil named 'Ardi' shook up human evolution. New critiques question whether Ardi really belongs on the human evolutionary tree...even though it was closer than Lucy to the common ancestor of humans and chimps...the Human Evolution Foundation in NJ said features of teeth, skull indicate."
Uh-oh, all is not well in evo-land!
Two other experts said they think it's too early to tell. "Until there is a more complete description of the skeleton, one has to be cautious...Will Harcourt-Smith, at the American Museum in NY, said he could not say whether [Ardi critics were] right or wrong. Rick Potts, at the Smithsonian Museum, said " I think it's just too soon to tell exactly."
Well, what about what the guy who discovered it said, in an Associated Press phone interview when he unveiled Ardi to the world? "This is not that common ancestor, but it's the closest we have ever been able to come." Tim White at UCal-Berkeley
